Curated by Kathy Grayson of The Hole, NY
“FACEMAKER” is a collaborative event featuring top young artists from across the United States, Japan, Greece, and Belgium who are creatively driven to find new ways to imagine a face, whether in painting, drawing, sculpture, or video. The exhibit explores the inherent tendency to see faces in all objects, which drives each artist to re-imagine the basic figure—whether idiosyncratic, fragmented, collaged, psychological, or geometric.
Featured in the show are works from contemporary young artists including the title piece by Ben Jones, in addition to Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, Joe Grillo, assume vivid astro focus, Tomoo Gokita, Eric Yahnker, Jane Moseley, Olaf Breuning, KAWS, Ted Mineo, David Shrigley, Shepard Fairey, Eddie Martinez, Taylor McKimens, Francine, Speigel, Avery Newman, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Robert Lazzarini, Aurel Schmidt, Kembra Pfahler, Rivas & Tullie, Aaron Johnson, Brian Belott, Matt Leines, SWOON, Allison Schulnik, Clare Rojas, Jules de Balincourt, Michael Williams, Takeshi Murata, Anders Oinonen, Justin Samson, Misaki Kawai, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Dennis Tyfus, Katherine Bernhardt, Todd James, Matt Greene, Stefan Bondell, Spencer Sweeney, Nate Lowman, Mat Brinkman, Jakub Julian Ziolkowski, Billy Grant, Adam Tullie and FriendsWithYou.

Mike Saijo - A Dream Deferred
The Intersection of Jewish, Latino, and Japanese-American Histories - Boyle Heights (circa 1940’s)
OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday March 26th, 6:00pm - 10:00pm
at
355 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90036
Artist Mike Saijo appears at the Caporale/Bleicher gallery this March, presenting a mixed-media installation that examines three ethnographic cultures -- the Japanese-American, Latino, and Jewish communities residing in Boyle Heights during the 1940’s. The various ways in which these groups historically and spatially converged are what created both the physical and the social landscape of modern day Los Angeles. The artist references traditional Japanese printmaking, illuminated manuscripts, war photography and street graffiti to chronicle the past as an allegory and etiology of contemporary cultural events.
A Dream Deferred opens Saturday March 26th, 6:00pm - 10:00pm at Caporale/Bleicher Gallery 355 N La Brea Ave and runs until April 5. The exhibit is sponsored by “Ignite” a fundraising event for the Roots and Wings Project. Ignite will feature additional works by Saijo and takes place Saturday April 2, 6pm til midnight at the SPARC Center, 685 Venice Blvd, Venice Beach.
